Cherilyn's education page

Welcome!

My name is Cherilyn Barrett. I'm a Preschool teacher for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH). I work with Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) and am situated at Palms Elementary in Perris, CA.

Growing up, I wanted to be something like a(n) actress, lawyer, president of the United States, but I never thought to be a teacher. Obviously, I'm none of these. I ended up being an advocate for the Deaf adults in a Social Worker type of setting. As I was working with these adults, I realized that they missed out on a lot academically and it was then that I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I had just had 2 kids by then. I left that field and started working in the Education field as a substitute teacher. I knew I had to go back to school to get my Teacher's credentials. And I did! With 4 kids clamoring for my attention, subbing at local Deaf school. I managed to do it!

And now I'm a preschool teacher. I am starting at the bottom - opposite of my previous job of working with the adults. At this level, I can bring them the language that they  need, Amerian Sign Language (ASL). When they master ASL, they can connect ASL to the English words.
